Meet the founder

Meet Theo Daley, founder of In Home Music Mentor.

“It started with knocking on doors in Portland, a guitar on my back, and one simple idea: follow the fun.”

Before In Home Music Mentor, I spent six years running one of the most successful SAT prep programs on the West Coast. The students who retained the most weren’t the ones being drilled — they were the ones who felt something. That gap led me to music.

Today we work with families in more than 25 cities, with a network of educators who share one belief: retention starts not with technique, but with how a student feels in the room.

Every teacher I bring on is personally interviewed, background checked, and trained in an approach that puts expression first and pressure last — because a stranger coming into your home should be someone you never have to think twice about.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions.

Still curious? A quick intro call answers everything — no pressure, no commitment.

In 2009, I started knocking on doors in my Portland neighborhood with a guitar on my back, eager to share the joy that music had brought back into my own life. Families connected right away to one simple idea: follow the fun.

Before I knew it, I had more students than I could teach, and soon found myself traveling and training teachers in other cities so more families could share the same experience.

We treat music as a language of expression, not a pressure cooker. Teachers are trained to mentor first. Lessons are playful, flexible, and collaborative — and families are part of the process.

Every time I moved, I trained local musicians in the same approach. Word spread because it worked. We grew through families talking to families, not flashy marketing.

Our teachers are local musicians who’ve been background checked, interviewed deeply, and trained in our approach to mentoring — not just instruction. They know how to meet a shy beginner, encourage a discouraged teen, and partner with parents so music becomes part of family life.

Practice is not a battlefield. It is a hearth. Five focused minutes done daily beats an hour done angrily. We help families build tiny, repeatable rituals so music becomes a place of power, not pressure.
