A Musical Journey That Started at Age Eight
Calvan’s musical journey began at just eight years old when his father bought him his first bass guitar. Growing up in a musical family meant that playing with other people became part of his development almost immediately through family jam sessions.
That early exposure helped Calvan experience music as something shared rather than something practiced only in isolation. As he continued developing, he played upright bass in his middle school orchestra and later began forming bands with friends during high school.
By age sixteen, Calvan had already released his first recording of original music. That early creative experience became the beginning of a much longer journey through songwriting, recording, bands, live performance, touring, and music education.
30 Years of Playing & Performing
Calvan began playing bass in 1996, followed by guitar in 2001, piano in 2013, and ukulele in 2018. He also has experience with basic drums.
Across approximately three decades of musicianship, Calvan has performed hundreds of live shows and participated in a U.S. national tour. He has contributed to seven albums with various bands, giving him substantial firsthand experience with rehearsing, performing, recording, collaborating, and developing original music.
That professional and creative experience gives students an opportunity to learn from someone who understands what happens beyond the lesson room—from the first stages of learning an instrument to working with other musicians and performing for an audience.
Music Education & Academic Background
From 2013 through 2015, Calvan studied Music Theory and Jazz Composition at Lane Community College and the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.
His educational background includes an Associate’s Degree in Music Theory and Performance, university credits in Jazz Studies and Composition, and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy.
This combination of formal music study, performance experience, and broader academic training contributes to Calvan’s ability to approach music from both practical and thoughtful perspectives.
Teaching Philosophy: Learning Through Play
At the center of Calvan’s teaching philosophy is a simple idea: students often learn best when the process feels like play.
Learning an instrument naturally comes with challenges. New techniques take repetition, difficult songs require patience, and musical growth requires dedication. Calvan believes that maintaining curiosity and enjoyment helps students develop the confidence necessary to work through those challenges.
Rather than using exactly the same lesson plan for every student, Calvan tailors his teaching to the individual’s goals, interests, learning style, and experience.
A student interested in performing with a band may need a different path from someone learning an instrument for personal enjoyment. Likewise, a six-year-old beginner and an adult returning to music after decades away will naturally benefit from different approaches.
More Than Learning an Instrument
Calvan believes that musical development can open pathways into many other areas of personal growth.
Music provides opportunities to practice dedication and discipline while also encouraging emotional awareness and self-expression. Playing with others teaches communication and listening. Exploring different styles can introduce students to new cultures, histories, communities, and perspectives.
For Calvan, those experiences are part of what makes learning music valuable. Becoming a better instrumentalist matters, but the lessons learned through making music can extend far beyond the instrument itself.
Lessons for Teens, Young Adults & Lifelong Learners
Calvan particularly enjoys working with high school students and young adults, an age when many musicians begin developing stronger individual tastes and deciding what kind of musician they want to become.
However, his teaching experience spans an exceptionally broad age range. Calvan has taught students as young as six and adults over seventy years old.
That experience allows him to adapt lessons for children discovering music, teenagers developing their musical identity, young adults working toward more advanced goals, and older students learning simply because music is something they have always wanted to pursue.
Advanced Bass & Guitar Instruction
Because Calvan teaches both bass and guitar through advanced levels, students can continue working with him well beyond the beginner stage.
His decades of performance and ensemble experience can be especially valuable for students interested in developing practical musicianship, playing with bands, improving their musical communication, exploring original music, or preparing for live performance.
For bass students in particular, Calvan brings nearly three decades of experience on his primary instrument, beginning with childhood family jam sessions and continuing through orchestral playing, bands, recording projects, touring, and regular professional performances.
