Why We Recommend Natasha for Piano Lessons in Portland

Natasha Flynn is an experienced pianist, vocalist, music educator, composer, and performer with more than 25 years of teaching experience. She works with students across nearly every stage of life, from young children beginning their first musical experiences to adults and seniors discovering—or rediscovering—the joy of playing piano.

Her teaching combines strong musicianship with creativity, encouragement, and an understanding that every student learns differently. Natasha places particular emphasis on helping students develop confidence, musical independence, and a lifelong connection to music rather than simply progressing through a series of pieces.

She specializes in early childhood development, helping adult students work through performance anxiety, and teaching Coordinate Movement techniques designed to promote ease of playing, healthy coordination, and injury prevention.

For families looking for personalized piano lessons in Portland, Natasha offers a thoughtful balance of structure, creativity, technical development, and musical exploration.

Areas of Expertise & Teaching Focus

  • Beginner through Advanced Piano: Developing technique, musicianship, repertoire, creativity, and confidence at a pace appropriate for the individual student.
  • Early Childhood Music Development: Using age-appropriate activities, games, movement, listening, and creative exploration to help younger students build a positive relationship with music.
  • Adult Piano Students: Creating an encouraging environment for adults beginning piano for the first time or returning after years away from the instrument.
  • Performance Anxiety: Helping students become more comfortable performing through preparation, confidence building, low-pressure learning, and practical performance experience.
  • Coordinate Movement: Teaching movement principles that support ease at the piano, healthy coordination, and injury prevention.
  • Improvisation & Composition: Encouraging students to create music of their own and explore familiar pieces in new ways.
  • Music Theory & Musicianship: Developing a deeper understanding of scales, harmony, rhythm, listening, memory, and musical structure.
  • Classical, Jazz & R&B/Soul: Drawing from Natasha’s broad background as a pianist, vocalist, composer, and professional performer.

25+ Years of Music Teaching Experience

Natasha has been teaching music for more than 25 years and has worked with students from early childhood through adulthood. She has had the opportunity to teach many students continuously from their early years through high school graduation, allowing her to see how musicianship develops over the long term.

As a parent of four, Natasha also brings a strong understanding of child development, patience, communication, and the importance of adapting expectations to the individual student.

She believes there are no mistakes—only opportunities to learn. Rather than creating unnecessary pressure around wrong notes or imperfect performances, Natasha uses thoughtful questions, redirection, and natural consequences to help students become more aware and independent.

What a Piano Lesson with Natasha Looks Like

Natasha’s lessons balance consistency with variety. A typical lesson may begin with warm-ups, scales, or technical exercises before reviewing material from the previous week and introducing new musical concepts.

From there, lessons can include theory games, duets, improvisation, listening activities, composition, and Coordinate Movement exercises. This variety helps students stay engaged while developing several areas of musicianship at the same time.

Natasha especially enjoys improvising and composing alongside her students. A student might take a section from a piece they are currently studying and experiment with changing the tempo, altering its expression, or transforming a classical melody into a blues-inspired version.

These exercises encourage students to understand music as something they can interact with creatively rather than simply reproduce from a page.

Developing the Musical Ear

Listening is an important part of Natasha’s teaching approach. Lessons may include interactive activities such as “Name That Tune,” where students practice recognizing familiar melodies, as well as musical memory games in which Natasha plays short passages for the student to repeat.

As students improve, these musical phrases gradually become longer and more complex, strengthening memory, listening skills, pattern recognition, and overall musicianship.

Natasha adapts these activities to each student’s learning style and interests so lessons maintain a healthy balance between structure and creativity.

Education & Professional Qualifications

Natasha earned her Bachelor of Music from Portland State University in 2009.

She continued her education at Portland State University and completed a Master’s degree in Education with a Music endorsement in 2011, all while continuing to teach piano.

  • Bachelor of Music: Portland State University, 2009
  • Master’s in Education, Music Endorsed: Portland State University, 2011
  • Teaching Experience: More than 25 years
  • Specialized Teaching: Early childhood development, Coordinate Movement, performance anxiety, improvisation, and composition

From Young Pianist to Music Director

Natasha began playing piano at age eleven and quickly developed interests in both composing and singing.

Throughout her education, she participated in choirs not only as a vocalist but also as an accompanist and conductor. She later spent ten years serving as a music director, where she led both children’s and adult choirs.

These experiences gave her a broad understanding of how musicians work together and how confidence, listening, leadership, and communication contribute to successful performances.

An Active Performer in the Portland Music Scene

Natasha’s musical experience extends well beyond the teaching studio. After college, she performed throughout the Portland music community as both a keyboardist and singer.

Her performance credits include Portland-based groups such as Joytribe, Anikka Forrest Project, Girl Can’t Help It—a tribute to Journey—and Bridgetown Get Down.

Natasha also recorded an original R&B/rock album under the name Tasha Flynn Band, working with professional Portland musicians. She performed material from the self-titled project throughout the Pacific Northwest during 2011 and 2012.

Her experience as a professional performer gives students the benefit of learning from someone who understands music from several perspectives—as a teacher, pianist, vocalist, composer, conductor, music director, accompanist, and live performer.

Optional Performance Opportunities

Students who are interested in performing can participate in optional recitals twice each year.

Natasha understands that not every student has the same relationship with performance, so these opportunities are designed to support growth rather than create unnecessary pressure. Students who choose to participate can work toward a meaningful performance goal while building confidence and learning how to prepare music for an audience.

A Positive Approach to Lifelong Musicianship

Natasha’s goal is to inspire creativity while helping students develop a genuine love of music. Strong technique and musicianship matter, but so do confidence, curiosity, connection, and the ability to enjoy the process of learning.

For some students, piano may become a lifelong creative outlet. Others may go on to perform, compose, sing, collaborate with other musicians, or simply enjoy playing music at home.

Natasha’s role is to help each student discover what music can mean to them personally while giving them the skills necessary to continue growing.
