A Lifelong Connection to Music

Zachary grew up in West Virginia surrounded by music through church, school, friendships, and his own musical exploration. He began playing piano around age seven and continued adding instruments throughout childhood and adulthood.

His early experiences helped shape an approach to music that is broad rather than restrictive. Instead of seeing musicians as belonging to only one instrument or genre, Zachary encourages students to explore how different instruments, sounds, and musical traditions connect.

Education & Professional Experience

Zachary moved to Chicago to pursue the arts, studying Industrial Design and trumpet at
Columbia College Chicago.

He later continued his studies at
Northeastern Illinois University,
with studies focused on trumpet performance and K–12 music education.

His teaching career began through after-school music classes, and during his twenties he performed with regional acts throughout the Midwest.

Years of Experience at School of Rock

Zachary spent more than eight years teaching students at
School of Rock Chicago,
working with students across instruments, ages, genres, and experience levels.

He also directed seasonal performances, including an adult band program, giving him extensive experience helping musicians move from individual lessons into rehearsals and live performance.

During a curriculum development period, Zachary contributed to work surrounding the
Rookies program,
which introduces younger children to music through age-appropriate exploration and group learning.

Music Fueled by Play & Expression

Zachary believes play is an important part of becoming a musician. Students should have room to experiment, make discoveries, and express themselves rather than feeling that every musical moment is a test.

His broad instrumental background also allows lessons to move beyond a single perspective. Rhythm can be explored through percussion, harmony through piano, melody through voice or trumpet, and songwriting through guitar or ukulele.
