A Lifelong Multi-Instrument Musician

Zachary grew up in West Virginia surrounded by music through church, school, friendships, performance, and his own musical exploration.

He began playing piano and keyboards around age seven and encountered the ukulele even earlier through his grandmother. Trumpet followed around age eleven, with guitar, drums, percussion, bass, and additional instruments becoming part of his musical life as he grew older.

Rather than defining himself through only one instrument, Zachary developed a broad understanding of how different parts of music work together. Rhythm can be explored through percussion, harmony through piano and keyboards, melody through voice or trumpet, and songwriting through guitar or ukulele.

Zachary moved to Chicago to pursue the arts, initially studying Industrial Design and trumpet at
Columbia College Chicago.

He later continued his education at
Northeastern Illinois University,
where his studies included Trumpet Performance and K–12 Music Education.

His teaching career began with after-school music classes, an experience that helped him discover his ability to connect with students and communicate musical ideas in an engaging way.

During his twenties, Zachary also performed with several regional acts throughout the Midwest, gaining practical experience with rehearsals, collaboration, live performance, and the realities of making music with other musicians.

More Than Eight Years at School of Rock

Zachary spent more than eight years teaching at School of Rock in Chicago, working with students across a wide range of ages, instruments, genres, and ability levels.

His work extended beyond individual lessons. Zachary directed seasonal shows and worked with ensemble programs, including an adult band known as The Late Stakes. These experiences gave him extensive practice helping students take skills developed during lessons and apply them in rehearsals and live performances.

During a company-wide curriculum development period, Zachary also contributed to the team developing the Rookies program for children approximately ages five through seven. The program was designed around age-appropriate musical exploration and became part of the instructional framework used across School of Rock locations.
